End to national state of disaster in sight

The Health Department is ready to present revised measures that would fall under protocols – to limit the spread and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla says they hope the reviewed health regulations and those proposed from other departments will assist in a guided reopening of both economic and social activities.

It seems government is particularly aiming at the leisure and tourism sectors including making traveling safer and cheaper.

In recent months there have been growing calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to dump the emergency law that had enabled the state to introduce regulations at short notice during the pandemic.

But with the active Covid-19 cases being low for several months now and with no pressure on the health system there is no need for the state of disaster.
