There are thousands of South Africa’s mines that are not in use, and researchers are determining if they can be repurposed.

German, Swedish and local firms are looking into whether disused gold mines can be converted to store hydroelectricity.

While this option is cheaper than constructing a new storage facility, will the South African government and mining companies get on board?
