A 15-year-old boy is among five suspects arrested in connection with the armed robbery of an e-hailing driver in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg. The arrests follow the circulation of a viral video showing the violent robbery.
Police say a 20-year-old driver responded to the ride request on Tuesday. A female passenger allegedly entered the vehicle and asked the driver to wait for her brothers.
Two male suspects then joined the ride before the group allegedly turned on the driver. Video footage shows another suspect engaging the handbrake while the victim was robbed.
The suspects allegedly stole cash, the driver’s licence, identity document and bank cards. The driver managed to escape from the vehicle during the ordeal.
One suspect allegedly fired a shot at the victim while demanding his cellphone, but no injuries were reported. The five suspects, aged between 15 and 21, are expected to appear in court soon on related charges.
