General Fannie Masemola says he returns to the position of national commissioner determined to unite SAPS, strengthen its institutional integrity and advance its constitutional responsibility to serve and protect the people of South Africa.
He was speaking upon his arrival at his office in Gauteng after his precautionary suspension was lifted following the NPA’s withdrawal of the charges against him.
Describing it as a difficult period, Masemola says he maintained confidence in the legal process and in the principle that matters of this nature must be resolved through lawful and appropriate channels.
He adds that his experience has reinforced the importance of due process, fairness and respect for the rule of law.
National police commissioner General Fannie Masemola has told his generals and members that they cannot build a strong police service on division, mistrust or competing personal interests.
“I return really to work with all of you. I’m not here to avenge or revenge. I’m here to lead an organization that must deliver service to the people of this country. Let’s concentrate on the bigger role and have the understanding that the role that we have been given is a borrowed authority from the citizens of this country.”
