Leap Officer Brent Williams Commended for Brave Rescue of Drowning Teen at Monwabisi Beach

A Leap officer has been commended for his bravery after risking his own safety to rescue a 14-year-old boy from drowning at Monwabisi Beach in September.

Officer Brent Williams was on routine patrol with three colleagues when they spotted the boy struggling in the water.
With no lifeguards on duty at the time, Williams removed his bulletproof tactical vest and entered the sea to assist. Strong waves and currents had pushed the boy further into the water.

Williams swam towards the boy, while two members of the public also entered the water to assist with the rescue. Together, they managed to bring the boy safely back to shore.

Despite the danger, Williams said his focus remained on getting the boy to safety.
“The minute I got to him, I felt relieved. I knew he would be okay,” said Officer Wiliams, who brought the boy safely to shore.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, has commended Williams for his quick response and bravery. Smith said the rescue demonstrated how law enforcement officers can go beyond their duties to assist members of the public.

Williams has since been formally recognised by the City of Cape Town for his actions.
