A shack fire has been brought under control in the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement in Hout Bay. The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says preliminary reports indicate that roughly 50 shacks have been destroyed. He says nearly 40 firefighters responded to the incident of structures alight in Hughenden Street around 01h30 on Tuesday.
An Incident Management Team (IMT) Type 4 was deployed to coordinate operational activities. The blaze was contained six hours later.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse: “Law enforcement officers were requested to assist after certain members of the community interfered with emergency personnel while they were carrying out their duties. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during firefighting operations and were treated on scene. Neither required transportation to hospital. No further injuries or fatalities have been reported and the cause of the fire is unknown.”
