Police in Mfuleni have arrested a 22-year-old man after he was found in possession of a firearm and 36 rounds of ammunition.
The arrest was made during a crime-combatting operation conducted by the Crime Prevention Unit yesterday.
Officers spotted three men behaving suspiciously at the corner of Tokwana Street before the suspects fled in different directions. Police gave chase on foot and pursued one of the suspects into Mhlathuzana Street. During the chase, the suspect allegedly threw a firearm into a nearby residence.
Officers recovered the weapon and later caught and arrested the man.
He now faces charges relating to the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
Meanwhile, Operation Lockdown III members in Lwandle arrested a 39-year-old man in Lwanje Street for allegedly possessing a prohibited firearm and ammunition. He is expected to make his first appearance in the Strand Magistrate’s Court after being charged.
