47,000 New Voters Registered to Vote; Promising Picture for Youth Vote

The Electoral Commission in the Western Cape says more than 235,000 voter registration activities were recorded during the past registration weekend.

The IEC says over 47,000 people registered to vote for the first time.

A further 187,000 citizens checked or updated their voter registration details. Nearly 50,000 people registered online, while more than 185,000 visited voting stations. However, five stations in Beaufort West, Cederberg and Kannaland could not open because of flood-related road damage.

The IEC says alternative arrangements will be made to reach those communities.

Young people showed encouraging participation during the registration drive. The highest level of activity was recorded among the 16 to 29 age group. Women accounted for more registrations and updates than men.

The Western Cape voters’ roll has grown by more than 85,000 voters since September last year.

A second voter registration weekend is scheduled for the 1st and 2nd of August.
