South Africans have journeyed through nearly 30 years of democracy and expectations only to see things deteriorating.
Author and Black studies academic Robin DG Kelley notes that under these circumstances, it is difficult to cultivate a vision for change.
This can be attributed to a struggle that focused on political freedom, but which neglected to ensure economic liberation.
Kelley contends that economic rights go beyond employment, housing, and health care, it is also a right to participate in a conversation on where the economy must go.
