East London is in mourning as it prepares to hold a mass funeral for the 21 young people who died at the Enyobeni Tavern.

The cause of their deaths is still be investigated with Police Minister Bheki Cele indicating that the probe will be wrapped up soon.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to attend the service and deliver the eulogy.

The disaster has raised questions about underage drinking as well as children being allowed into these spaces. The youngest victim of the tavern disaster is believed to be 13.

There are rising calls for a serious discussion about South Africa’s relationship with alcohol. During the ban on the sale of liquor at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic the country saw a drastic drop in hospitalisations linked to alcohol.
