The Western Cape Education Department has headed to the High Court to remove people living on land near Cathkin High School in Heideveld. The department argues that the community that is made up of some 110 informal structures poses a safety risk to teachers and learners. WCED spokesperson, Bronagh Hammond says that an eviction order was first granted in 2018. The matter is now again before the courts.

The land in question belongs to the provincial government and has been illegally occupied. The City of Cape Town has meanwhile indicated that it would provide alternative accommodation to the community, should the eviction be granted. The matter will be heard in court tomorrow.
