Two killed at New Somerset Hospital in Green Point

The Western Cape Health and Wellness Department has expressed its shock at the deadly shooting at the New Somerset Hospital in Green Point.

Two patients were killed and three others including a police constable were injured. The department says according to the immediate facts a person, who was ready to be discharged, obtained a firearm during an altercation with a police officer who was guarding another patient. Police have said that a 40-year-old man managed to disarm an officer.

The Sea Point based cops had brought a 35-year-old suspect to the hospital for medical attention. The shooter has been arrested.

Meanwhile Premier Alan Winde has extended his condolences to the families that have lost a relative during this horrific incident.

He adds that it’s a painful moment for everyone and expects a full investigation to determine all the facts surrounding this incident.
