The Power of Community Radio: How Aunty Banu Found Hope Through Radio 786

CAPE TOWN – What a treat! Avid Radio 786 listener, Noor-Banu Allie visited our studios today.

The 78-year-old thanked the team for their diverse programming, which also helped her in preventing her eviction from her District Six home. Aunty Banu, as she is affectionately known, says that listening to Radio 786 has helped her in the battle to keep a roof over her head. She approached Ndifuna Ukwazi, which features regularly on Radio 786 to challenge her eviction from one of the last remaining streets of District Six. This area also survived the demolitions of the Group Areas Act.

Aunty Banu has a land claim for a family home that was demolished by the Apartheid regime. Her claim is frozen in the second round of land claim applications, after the first round failed to be completed.
