The new coronavirus variant, also known as SARS-CoV-2 or 501.v2 has been identified in nearly 200 samples from various clinics in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. The mutated strain is known for spreading much faster and is more contagious than the initial strand. It also seems to be affecting more young people.

However, experts have admitted that there is no evidence to suggest that the current Covid-19 vaccines will be as effective against the 501.v2 variant. To help us understand this better, we are joined by virologist, Dr Graeme Brendon Jacobs…
