The Taiwan informal settlement in Khayelitsha must be declared a local disaster area. Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu visited the site to assess the damage of the devastating blaze.

The latest figures show that about 350 structures were destroyed leaving more than 1,000 residents homeless. The Minister is set to hold another meeting with local and provincial role-players to establish how the community can be aided urgently.
