Tafelsig on Edge after Burnt Body discovery as Residents Confront Alleged Murder Suspect

Tensions erupted in Tafelsig on Tuesday, as angry residents took to the streets following the discovery of a woman’s severely burnt body over the weekend.

Police maintained a strong presence in the area after community members allegedly confronted and detained a person they believed was linked to the woman’s death. Police confirmed that the suspect is now in custody.

The unrest saw residents burn tyres in parts of Tafelsig and threw stones at passing vehicles and the police. Several roads, including Langerberg, Piketberg and Keeromsberg, were reportedly blocked as authorities worked to restore calm.

The violence follows the discovery of a burnt body at the corner of Hugenote Street and AZ Berman Drive on Saturday, 17 October. Police said officers were alerted to the scene at approximately 12.46pm.

The body had been burned beyond recognition, prompting police to open a murder investigation. A post-mortem examination was requested to help investigators establish the identity of the deceased and determine the cause of death.

The gruesome discovery left residents shocked and angry, with members of the community demanding answers about what happened to the woman.

Ward councillor Norman Adonis said tensions escalated after community members identified a person they believed was responsible for the killing. Residents reportedly located the person and held them inside a house before police intervened.

Adonis said he understood the community’s anger and frustration following the discovery, but warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.

As tensions escalated, tyres were reportedly set alight in several streets and stones were thrown at police and passing vehicles. Police deployed crowd-control measures, including stun grenades, in an attempt to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said Public Order Police remained on the scene after a group of community members gathered to protest against the alleged murder suspect.

Gwala said protesters threw stones and burnt tyres during the unrest.

The incident has also gained concerns about violence against women, following the discovery of the woman’s burnt body in Tafelsig on Saturday.
