Sweeping Crack-Down Proposed in New Traffic By-law

The City’s Safety and Security Portfolio Committee has approved an amended traffic by-law, aimed at curbing dangerous driving, and improve road safety.

The amendments focus on stricter provisions for vehicle impoundment and related penalties.

Vehicles may be impounded for illegal street racing and driving under the influence. Drivers without valid licences also face having their vehicles seized. Reckless driving that endangers lives is another key trigger for impoundment. Vehicles fitted with false number plates are also targeted under the new rules.

A new provision allows impoundment for excessive vehicle noise. Officials say the revised by-law will help enforce a zero-tolerance approach to reckless driving.

The amendments will now proceed to the Mayoral Committee and then Council for final approval.
