Saudi Arabia’s lifting of the travel ban on South Africa has been welcomed.

The South African Muslim Travel Operators Association (SAMTOA) says it’s with great joy that they note the decision of the Saudi Authorities. However it’s still awaiting further details.

In February, Riyadh banned travel from 20 countries due to the highly infectious Covid-19 Delta Variant. However, last month it opened its doors to tourists following a year and half ban.

The Saudi Hajj and Umrah Ministry has indicated that tourist visa holders can now perform the minor pilgrimage of Umrah and visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. It has also raised the number of people who can perform this pilgrimage to 70 000 this month. But they will need to adhere to all Covid-19 precautionary measures including being fully vaccinated.
