In recent months, a gun racket involving corrupt police officers and organized crime has been at the centre of the suspicions swirling around the assassination of a senior police detective from Bishop Lavis.

It is widely reported that Lieutenant Charl Kinnear had been investigating the issuance of fraudulent licenses from the Central Firearms Control Registry.

The matter has led to a serious debate about the use and control of guns in stemming crime in South Africa, especially on the Cape Flats.
