The SABC will be auctioning its non-core properties, including residential properties leased to its employees. This is in a bid to reduce the likelihood of retrenchments at the public broadcaster. The SABC did not say when the auction would take place.

It did not immediately say which properties would be impacted, or how many employees may be affected. Yolande van Biljon, the SABC’s Chief Financial Officer, said in a statement that the disposal of non-core assets as part of the public broadcaster’s turnaround plan.

It comes as the public broadcaster was forced to halt the retrenchment process due to intensified staff protests and their threat of a blackout. The process has been put on hold until the end of next month to allow for further talks.
