South Africa’s green energy sector will be taking on a new dynamic with the European Union announcing two significant investments.
R140 million will support Transnet’s trade initiatives, while R500 million is earmarked for advancing the green hydrogen agenda. EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson signed the agreement in Pretoria, alongside Energy and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa.
The latter has hailed the investment as a job creator and a step towards re-industrialising the economy. However, there is concern that a level of green colonialism is playing out. Are these EU deals going to help Africans, or will we once again be the producers while the Global North reaps the benefits?
