A South African soldier has been killed in an incident of friendly fire in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The SA National Defence Force (SANDF) says the soldier who was part of its peacekeeping mission in that country was shot during an operation in Kilia.

A board of inquiry has been established to investigate the incident.
