As calls for the de-dollarisation intensifies from various BRICS nations, South Africa seems to have no aspiration of toppling the US dollar.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says if BRICS plus nations want to trade amongst themselves, then it makes sense to use their own currencies in paying each other.

However, Gondongwana stressed that getting rid of the dollar will present a technical challenge because it means other nations would need sufficient reserves in their own country first before doing trade.

Calls for de-dollarisation have been heavily backed by Russia in the wake of economic sanctions for its war against Ukraine.
