SA Navy Festival returns to Simon’s Town

The 2026 SA Navy Festival will return to Simon’s Town this week, drawing thousands of visitors to the historic naval base for a weekend that blended military display, public engagement, and seaside entertainment.

Held from 17 to 19 April at Naval Base Simon’s Town, the annual event opens the South African Navy’s doors to civilians, offering rare access to facilities and operations typically closed to the public. Running daily from 10am to 5pm, the free festival remains one of the country’s most anticipated defence-related public events.

At the heart of the festival are guided tours of naval vessels, including a Type 209 submarine, alongside live operational demonstrations such as firefighting drills and search-and-rescue exercises. Visitors are also to witness precision drills and performances by the South African Navy Band, providing both insight and spectacle.

While the military displays forms the core of the event, the festival maintains a strong family-friendly atmosphere. Food stalls, live music, and children’s entertainment creates a relaxed environment along the False Bay coastline, appealing to both defence enthusiasts and casual visitors.

Additional rail services will operate along the Metrorail Western Cape line between Cape Town and Simon’s Town, with affordable fares making the event accessible to a wider audience.

Beyond the entertainment, the festival serves a broader purpose. It aims to promote awareness of maritime security, showcase the Navy’s operational capabilities, and highlight career opportunities within the force. Officials say the event also plays a role in strengthening public trust by increasing transparency and engagement.

The festival comes at a time when maritime trade routes and ocean security remain critical to South Africa’s economy. By opening its doors to the public, the Navy not only demonstrated its operational readiness but also reinforced its role in safeguarding national interests.

As crowds are expected to stream through Simon’s Town over the weekend, the 2026 SA Navy Festival stands as both a celebration of naval heritage and a reminder of the strategic importance of South Africa’s maritime domain.
