The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance is waiting on government to reveal how they will reduce alcohol harm this year.

It comes after ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa noted the impacts of alcohol. However, the Alliance’s Terri-Liza Fortein argues that merely acknowledging a problem will not save lives or reduce harm. It follows the Enyobeni tavern resulting in the deaths of 21 children under the age of 18 in a tavern.

The Alliance says as a way of shifting responsibility, government, much like the liquor industry, calls on the public to engage in responsible drinking.
