If Transnet doesn’t get its affairs in order, ordinary South Africans would have to pay the price. This is the assertion from economist, Professor Adrian Saville. His comments follow Treasury’s announcement of a massive support package for the ailing parastatal.

It will see a R47-billion guarantee facility that will almost immediately settle half of Transnet’s liquidity matters, including settling part of Transnet’s debt. Saville explains that Transnet needs to get its financial matters smoothed out, or risk not being able to get goods into the country, which will lead to price increases.
