Public sector cancer care expensive

SHARE

The cost of cancer treatment for the average South African is very high. This as a study conducted in 2020 showed the cost of chemotherapy in the public sector is just over R15 000. This is per episode of care at Groote Schuur Hospital for breast cancer alone. The out of pocket costs for cancer patients is also high as patients would need certain foods, mental support and general household expenses if they are treated at home.
