According to the Islamic Organisation for Food Security, half the countries in need of food support have a Muslim majority.

At a conference focusing on Food Security hosted in Cape Town, international speakers offered their research on what innovations are needed to ensure sustainable food supply to eradicate hunger.

One of the key speakers, Dr Afzal Hussain, chairman of Muslim economic development group, Al Mukarramah, notes that the main contributors to food insecurity in Muslim majority countries include the lack of proper storage facilities for fresh produce and poor transportation networks to get the food to the necessary points.

This conference comes as there is also concern that political instability and climate change are the biggest causes of hunger and malnutrition in Muslim countries.
