The role of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) could be compromised as allegations of corruption have surfaced against the body’s head.

IPID staff have reportedly written to the Presidency and the Hawks to investigate Jennifer Ntlatseng. They accuse her of nepotism and maladministration.

But Senior Researcher at the Centre for Criminology at UCT, Dr Simon Howell says that IPID has been lacking in strong leadership for some time. He says that Ntlatseng is more of an administrator than an investigator. This is compromising the role of the oversight body.

Howell explains that under Ntlatseng’s leadership, IPID has become more of an administrative organisation than an investigative one. He says that with the corruption allegations levelled against Ntlatseng, the investigation into her conduct will prove complicated.
