The past weekend of deadly shootings in Bonteheuwel points to gangsters trying to reassert their dominance in the area.

Ward Councillor Angus McKenzie says that authorities have cracked down on drug houses, which are often the strongholds of gangsters.

He says that it’s not just drug abuse that takes place in these houses.

Two people were shot and killed in separate incidents within the space of an hour on Friday night in Bonteheuwel.

McKenzie says that while police are making a difference in the area, there is still much work that needs to be done.

He was speaking as two people have been shot and killed in Khayelitsha, with two others recovering from their injuries.

The local development forum’s chairperson, Ndithini Tiyihido says that police resources are being misdirected.

He says that drug houses are not as big a problem as the violence gripping communities this past month.
