Police Attacked by Axe in Delft

Investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding a brazen axe attack on a police officer at Delft SAPS.

Three young suspects, including a 23-year-old woman, were arrested.

The constable was standing outside the Community Service Centre around 2am on Monday when a suspect armed with an axe struck him. He was hit in the head, which police spokesperson Colonel André Traut says caused serious injuries. A fellow officer who witnessed the incident responded by firing warning shots, causing the suspects to flee. They abandoned their vehicle. Traut says a coordinated pursuit by SAPS members and LEAP officers resulted in the arrest of the trio. The axe believed to have been used in the attack was also recovered.

The suspects are expected to appear in a Cape Town court this week.

Western Cape police have condemned the violent attack. The constable is reported to be in a stable condition.
