Minority governments are becoming more pronounced at a municipal level in South Africa. This as a growing number of citizens seem to be stepping away from the electoral process as political parties are effectively failing to improve their lives.

A number of hung councils have emerged. It stands at over 30. This means coalition governments will need to be formed.

In recent years smaller parties have increasingly chipped away at the support of both the DA and the ANC.

Meanwhile a watchful eye should be kept on the minor shifts in support for political parties that espouse social conservatism and intolerance.

Parties like the Freedom Front Plus, Patriotic Alliance and Action SA have witnessed a rise in support.

Political analyst, Dr Dale McKinley says it’s part of a global phenomenon and is a concern.
