The man responsible for the death of little Tiano Anthony in Manenberg has been granted R2000 bail.

Tiano was playing outside when the illegal firearm of the accused apparently discharged accidentally while he was cleaning the weapon. The nine-year-old boy died a day later from a gunshot wound to the head.

The suspect who appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court faces charges of murder as well as being in possession of an illegal firearm.

In court, the magistrate heard that the firearm was used for alleged protection. At the time of the murder, he was selling drugs from the residence he lives at while the child was playing at the gate.

According to his bail conditions, the suspect will need to report to the Elsies River police station three times a week and reside at an alternative address.

The case has been postponed to the 4th of September.
