Cape Town’s long-abandoned unfinished freeways are set for a major transformation, with plans unveiled to create a new bridge, promenade and mixed-use neighbourhood in the Foreshore precinct. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis announced the proposal alongside Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Transnet CEO Michelle Phillips.
The project aims to turn the unfinished highways into a new transport link that will ease congestion in and around the city centre. The city has released concept drawings and will now begin a process of public consultation. The development will be rolled out in two phases to minimise disruption to existing traffic flows. Phase one includes the construction of a new bridge over Buitengracht Street and the widening of the inbound freeway.
The upgraded route will connect directly to Helen Suzman Boulevard. City officials say motorists travelling towards Green Point and Sea Point will be able to bypass the CBD, helping reduce congestion. Phase two will see the construction of an outbound tunnel.
