A committee is set to be appointed to lead an inquiry into the deadly building fire in the Johannesburg CBD that claimed the lives of more than 70 people including children. Dozens of others were also injured in the inferno at the five-storey building.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says they will work with the Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola.

The inquiry will be tasked to investigate the prevalence of hijacked buildings in the city, who must take responsibility and the cause of the incident.

Lesufi further notes that efforts are being made to strengthen the Gauteng province’s management of disasters following a string of incidents this year. It’s collaborating with national government and local authorities to improve its capabilities. He says they don’t want to witness or grow accustomed to these events, describing the building fire as one of the worst catastrophes the province has experienced in recent memory.
