At least 400 people have been displaced after a fire ripped through the Taiwan informal settlement in Khayelitsha. The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre says just over 140 structures were destroyed and eleven formal houses. Emergency sheltering hasn’t been activated as the affected are staying with family and friends.
The Social Security Agency SASSA has been asked to provide relief aid. The fire fanned by strong winds took firefighters more than eight hours to contain and extinguish. The City’s Fire and Rescue Services say there were no casualties.
