Eskom customers are paying more for electricity this month. The 9.61 percent tariff hike granted by the energy regulator, NERSA has come into effect.

The power utility had sought a 20.5 percent increase but this was rejected. Come July residents who receive their electricity from their municipalities like the City of Cape Town will feel a similar financial squeeze. The City is proposing a 9,5% increase in the price of electricity this year. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has said that they are unable to absorb the Eskom tariff hike in its entirety.
