Hangberg: Community Dignity Hangs in the Balance

The housing problem in Hangberg remains a concern as a development in the area to build 439 units has hit several snags.

It comes as the community has been at odds with the City of Cape Town for some time, as they often face threats of demolitions.

Community activist, Lee Smith, says that its frustrating for residents to see land being sold off to private developers while they must be content with small plots, and poor living conditions.

He contends that the community’s relationship has taken more strain as a result.

On the issue of Hangberg’s hope for the upcoming Local Government Elections, Smith says that there is too much mistrust in political parties.

Smith says that there may be a small turn-out for the November 1 polls.
