CAPE TOWN – Groote Schuur Hospital is gearing up to open a new Emergency Centre in 2026, which it promises will be a state-of-the-art centre. The Groote Schuur Hospital Trust says it will significantly enhance the Western Cape’s capacity to provide rapid, life-saving care to thousands of people each year. But while it has the space and building for the centre, it’s in need of an estimated R20 million in specialised trauma equipment.
The Trust has appealed to individuals, corporates, and foundations to be part of this transformation by making contributions. The hospital, which is a national trauma referral centre, cares for more than 50,000 inpatients and half a million outpatients annually.
The old emergency centre has been in use since 1987. Medical Manager of Emergency & Critical Care Services, Dr Shrikant Peters, says the old units will be converted into a radiology suite for the centre and a pre-admission space for those waiting for beds
