Godongwana Announces Temporary Fuel Levy Cuts to Ease Pressure on Motorists

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced a temporary fuel levy relief aimed at easing pressure on motorists facing record-high fuel prices.

The announcement was made during the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement. From 4 November to 1 December, the general fuel levy will be reduced by R3 per litre for diesel and R1.50 per litre for petrol.

Thereafter, the relief will be scaled back to R1.50 per litre for diesel and R1 per litre for petrol until 5 January next year. The move comes after fuel prices surged sharply in October.

Government says the relief package will provide R10 billion in support to consumers.

The measure will be funded by returning the funds previously transferred to the Central Energy Fund back to the National Revenue Fund.

Meanwhile, Minister Godongwana noted that there will be an increase in the general fuel levy allocation to municipalities
