Floods, Gale Winds and Rough Seas Expected as Cold Fronts to Hit Cape Town

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe weather conditions expected to affect parts of the Western Cape from Sunday, 10 May, until Tuesday, 12 May 2026, as two cold fronts are forecast to make landfall over the coming days.

According to the advisory, the first cold front is expected to arrive on Sunday morning, followed by a second system on Monday. The weather systems are likely to bring disruptive rainfall, localised flooding, strong to gale-force winds and damaging waves along coastal areas.

The City confirmed that all relevant emergency and disaster management services are on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents and urged residents to take precautionary measures to safeguard their homes and properties.

Residents are advised to clear gutters and drainage systems, inspect roofs for leaks or loose sheeting, and secure outdoor furniture and other loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds. People living in informal settlements are encouraged to dig trenches to divert water away from their homes and raise flooring levels where possible to reduce the risk of flooding.

The warning comes after the Garden Route region endured an intense bout of severe weather earlier this week, which caused widespread disruption and damage across several communities. Heavy rainfall, strong winds and flooding damaged roads, homes and infrastructure, while emergency teams were called out to multiple weather-related incidents. Tragically, one woman lost her life during the adverse weather conditions, highlighting the dangerous impact of the storm systems that have battered parts of the province in recent days.

The City reminded residents that non-emergency service requests can be reported via the Call Centre on 0860 103 089, the City website or mobile application. In cases involving threats to life or property, the public is urged to contact the Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 immediately.
