The police watchdog Ipid has confirmed that it’s investigating the alleged assault of a civilian in Emerald Crescent in Fish Hoek.

Video doing the rounds on social media shows a policeman pinning a man to the ground while another officer hits him with a baton. A female voice is heard pleading with the officers to leave the man alone.

According to the man he had called police to file a missing persons report but they didn’t want to help him.

The Fish Hoek Community Policing Forum says they tried visiting the man when he was detained but were denied access. It adds that its two members were physically ejected from the police station. It plans on filing a complaint over this.

Western Cape police have yet to comment on the incident.
