A concerted effort to trace and track down all firearms used in crime is needed.

Gun Free SA and former top cop Jeremy Veary believes this will assist in stemming the tide of illegal weapons. In addition, he believes tougher firearm regulations are required including increasing the frequency of competency tests of gun owners. An attempt to reduce the number of lost firearms.

Police licensing corruption, lost guns, and a former police officer Christiaan Prinsloo selling weapons to gangsters, have contributed to the illegal gun trade.

The latest crime statistics reveal that firearms are the weapon of choice to execute crime and murders in the Western Cape.

Veary has called for the return of a firearms tracing unit, which will also focus on the supply line of illegal guns
