A Khayelitsha policeman has been charged with drunk driving and negligence following an altercation with a taxi driver. Videos of the incident show a police vehicle against a minibus taxi. The 33-year-old constable approaches the taxi driver and seemingly throws the first punch. Later a physical fight erupts. Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says an internal disciplinary investigation is underway. She adds that the taxi driver will also be interviewed and his conduct is also being probed.

The police’s services management has condemned what it says is unbecoming conduct of a police official. It has promised that the officer will face consequences for his actions.
