Drunk driver arrested with imitation firearm, ammunition and suspected cocaine on N2

A drunk driver has been arrested and found in possession of an imitation firearm, three rounds of ammunition and suspected cocaine on the N2 highway near Mew Way.

The City’s Traffic Service spokesperson, Kevin Jacobs, says the vehicle was stopped after officers spotted a Mercedes-Benz swerving across the roadway before 7pm on Thursday. Officers detected a strong smell of alcohol emanating from his breath. He was found nearly three times over the legal permissible alcohol limit.

The suspect and seized items were handed over to Khayelitsha Police Station for further investigation and processing. Jacobs says this incident highlights the importance of proactive patrols by the Highway Patrol Unit, particularly on high-risk routes, in identifying dangerous driving behaviour and removing potentially dangerous items from the road.
