Day-Zero has hit for certain communities in Gqeberha.

Project Manager for Gift of Givers Ali Sablay says some communities have not had access to water for more than two weeks, and have now gone into a panic.

He was speaking as Gift of the Givers is on the ground in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro as its ‘Day-Zero’ is on their doorstep.

“Due to the magnitude of the disaster, the national Department of Water and Sanitation has taken over the metro. They are controlling the disaster interventions.” said Sablay.

Yesterday, the municipality turned off the Church Hill Dam – the main dam supplying the metro with water.

To mitigate the impact, Gift of the Givers has drilled nine boreholes.
