More than R8 million has been lost due to the shutdown of construction of a housing project in the Airport Precinct in Gugulethu.

The Western Cape Infrastructure MEC Tertius Simmers believes a construction mafia is behind attacks on workers at three sites. The sites were closed in March after a second shooting. During these incidents two workers were shot and wounded.

Simmers says it’s believed these shootings were preceded by acts of intimidation and threats at the sites by certain groups claiming to be representatives of an unknown business forum.

Simmers has appealed to the Gugulethu community to come forward and provide information to apprehend the culprits, who seek to derail progress.
