A proposal is on the table to permanently close off a section of Klipfontein Service Road in Athlone to improve traffic flow and road safety.
According to the City of Cape Town, the closure would be between Thornton and Eagle Roads, the corner where the South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) offices are located.
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate says the recommendation is aimed at discouraging rat-running along the service road, as well as freeing up flow at the Thornton, Klipfontein Service and North Link Roads intersection, which leads onto the vital arterial route of Klipfontein Road.
Another proposed closure is East Street, which the Directorate says will discourage the transference of unnecessary traffic to South Avenue.
Residents have until 3 August to submit their comments on these proposed changes.
An information session will also be held at the Gleemoor Baptist Church Hall in Sunnyside on 22 July from 3 – 7pm where residents will have direct access to the relevant City officials for further insight into the proposals.
