The problems in Khayelitsha following the past two days’ heavy rains are being experienced across the Cape Flats.

Community activist, Nomzamo Kuzwayo-Luboya says that many families have lost their homes, and their furniture has been damaged by the floods.

The City of Cape Town is meanwhile continuing its assessments of the impact on informal settlements. The affected areas include Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Delft, Gugulethu, Masiphumulele, Philippi, and Langa.

Kuzwayo-Luboya says that the problems in the townships occur every winter, yet affluent areas experience regular infrastructural upgrades and assessments before the onset of winter.
