Calls for J&J Vaccine Contract Investigation

A group of civil organisations will file an application for information to get to the specifics of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine contract with the South African government.

The Health Justice Initiative’s Fatima Hassan says this follows a New York Times report that revealed that the contract forbids the government from imposing vaccine export restrictions.

This is unlike what was allowed in Europe.

Hassan says that this hinders South Africans from ensuring a sustainable supply of vaccines.

She says that J&J has done a disservice to the country and that their contract needs to be investigated.

This as the UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Health, Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, says transparency has been missing in the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines.

This has reinforced the trend of vaccine inequity, which has cost several lives globally.
